Street Church blog - a flavour of our each activities each week

Sunday 2nd April

The ever popular pampering session went well again today. We are so grateful for our pampering team who give up their time on a Sunday afternoon. The next pampering session is on Sunday 21st May.

Lots of good humour today and it was a generally busy afternoon. There are always new faces and alongside that there are those that are missed when they are not there. I only go along on pampering Sundays now as I go along to the Street Church drop in on Tuesday nights. It seems that although some of the same folk attend both sessions, there are also many who attend one and not the other. This shows just how many in total attend. So many chaotic lives gathered together and very much family. I have no concept of a way of life that isolates from society those who so need to feel accepted. An outstretched hand of friendship can make such a difference to someones life. So many more would love to have a foot spa but are too embarrassed to remove their footwear. In many ways society as a whole is reluctant to show a side to the world that is embarrassing to them as they feel the need to look good in front of others. Sadly this denies them comfort and a feeling of well being. Jesus would have no problem with washing their feet as we know!

Lots of clothes were gratefully received but as always jeans are much sought after and in demand and we are always happy to receive them.

I said recently that on the odd occasion when I feel that it may be time for me to move on from working with the homeless and vulnerable in our town, God always says the exact opposite! I am thankful for that as I would so miss my extended family!

Thanking the Salvation Army East very much for catering today. Next week Dick and Sue will be singing for us and Mount Zion will be catering.

Sunday 26th March

Perhaps it was the clocks going forward or the sunny weather, but only half the usual number of friends arrived this afternoon.

The vibe was really good and they enjoyed the feast laid on by The New Testament Church of God; who also gave the Word for the Day. The Church said that the provisions from them were a love gift. However, they continued by emphasising that the greatest gift of all was given by Jesus when He died on the cross for us providing the answer to life's problems for all who would accept it. Everyone listened intently and broke into spontaneous applause.

Millie Octavia, the youngest attendee at 6 months, sat quietly, her soft fur and cute face winning much admiration, and she seemed not at all phased at becoming a therapeutic "PAT puppy" for our friends to cuddle.

We were able to help those who came by giving out clothing, the nights are still chilly and gloves, socks and underwear were in great demand. Great inroads were made into the stock of toiletries too. One couple in particular were overwhelmed by the gift of warm items to mitigate the hardship of rough sleeping.

Next week the numbers are bound to increase because it's the ever popular Pampering session. We were already being asked about it this week. So it's over to you then Ann and Jo! The Salvation Army will be catering for us next week.

Sunday 12th March

It seemed to be busy today! The word for the day was given in English and also translated into Polish. Dick and Sue sang songs, alongside Dick giving a word which was also translated into Polish. The translation is an added blessing.

Thank you to Living Grace church for doing a great job with the catering as well as bringing lots of clothes all lovingly bagged up and labelled. It never ceases to amaze me how we are blessed with so many clothes etc. It is certainly true that what some consider no longer of value, others consider an absolute treasure! Trainers and tee shirts are always sought after and readily re-homed!

Today I saw someone in the queue waiting for his soup who looked very like a young man that I have known for many years. A young man who always had a good job and lived a very "normal" life. Then he looked up and spoke to me using my name and I realized that he was the same young man that I know! I was lost for words! He smiled and said that it is just a blip......This situation just brought home to me how easy it is for everything to suddenly go wrong! No one is born to be homeless and vulnerable. Bless him.

Next week Park Avenue will be catering for us. Have a blessed week my friends.

Sunday 5th March

Busy! We prayed at the outset that God would be with us and would change lives, and believe that to be the case. We know that you join with us in prayer on a weekly basis and are so grateful for that. We have been specially asked to pray by those with addictions, some who are so close to breaking free who fall again as they are almost there. Jesus died to set us free from this tyranny.

Paul, who has a great gift of diffusing difficult situations proved his ability yet again this week. What would we do without you Paul!

The cupboard was open and warm clothing, bedding etc. disappeared really quickly so that some were left disappointed and advised to come early next week.

Thank you to the caterers the Grand Union Benefice for this week's gracious spread (approximately 70 catered for + more to take home!) Next week Living Grace church will be catering and I think the Dick and Sue may be there to entertain with songs. Thanks too to Mount Pleasant for hosting us.

Yet another Bible and more Christian literature were taken, together with some handouts. God's word does not return to Him void.

Pocket tissues disappeared like hot cakes and great inroads were made into the toiletries.

It was lovely to see a couple walking home with big smiles on their faces having come to Street Church looking distressed. Something happens at Street Church - Jesus is there!

Please keep praying, and thank you for your generous support,
