Street Church blog - a flavour of our each activities each week

Sunday 9th July

This morning Paul, Mary and myself were invited to Park Avenue Methodist church as they were dedicating a service to the work of Street Church. It was a blessing to be able to share the work that is done at Streetchurch at Mount Pleasant baptist church and the Streetchurch Drop In on Tuesdays at Castle Hill URC. We were warmly welcomed and the folks there were very interested and touched by our words.

At this point I need to say that sadly Mary wasn't able to take up her invitation this morning as her dear father passed away last night in his 97th year. Please keep Mary and her husband David and her brothers and their families in your prayers.

Dick and Sue entertained our friends this afternoon and there was a very relaxed atmosphere throughout. A moments silence was held for Tony who sadly lost his battle last week re injuries sustained in a road traffic accident.

We thank Park Avenue Methodist church for their great catering today and we look forward to seeing our friends from the Grand Union Benefice as they cater for us next week.

Sunday 2nd July

The ever popular pampering session was indeed as popular as ever and despite only having two hairdressers and a barber, all who needed a haircut left happy. We so appreciate folks giving up their Sunday afternoons to cut our friends hair. It was so busy in the main hall that the foot spa was moved out into the entrance hall and it proved to be very popular there. By the third foot wash I had managed to get the bubbles under contro! It was so good to hear how much better folk felt for a spa, foot massage and new socks! It is quite a personal thing to be doing and a great opportunity for good conversations. I think that I have found my niche :)

We were sad this week to hear of Tony who was involved in an accident on the Bedford road, being hit by a car. His condition is still serious as far as we know so please keep him in your prayers.

The food was happily received as some folk were very hungry today. A regular service that is provided on Saturday was not there yesterday and many had not eaten for some time. At times like these we realise the importance of Streetchurch where we provide so much more than food.

There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere generally and although it is sad in one way to see the same folks that we have been seeing for quite a while, in another way it is good to know that they are still managing to maintain their friendships with both Streetchurch and members of their street family.

Many said a heartfelt thank you as they left and that left me thinking, what better way is there to spend a Sunday afternoon? Thanks go to the Salvation Army East for a great job re catering today and next week, Park Avenue Methodist Church will be catering for us.

Thank you for your support and prayers and for  the interest you show in the work of Streetchurch here in Northampton.

Sunday 25th June

Thanks to a rather inconvenient heavy rain shower, some of us arrived a little damp! The lovely soup soon dispelled any lasting effects of the downpour.

The atmosphere was good and there was a lot of laughter and cheerful banter. The hygiene packs were warmly received and disappeared very quickly. We are always happy to receive any of the hygiene items as detailed by Mary last week. Also Christian books etc are still readily received. Thank you to all who have already donated.

Due to a last minute change of plan, Lesley, Mary and myself gave an impromptu dramatisation of the story of Mary Jones and her 10 years of hard work at a very young age, to save up to buy a Bible. This of course highlights how readily available Bibles are now. We rounded off our drama with a short rendition of a relevant song which was received with much applause. It is encouraging how many
of our friends sit and listen to the Words for Today now.

Many thanks to the Cathedral for their catering and their generous gifts of cakes and biscuits for the Streetchurch drop in on Tuesday. Next week the Salvation Army are catering and there will be an ever popular pampering session.

Sunday 18th June

On the hottest afternoon for a long time there was a surprisingly large gathering of friends. Often they seem to go elsewhere when the weather is good, but today they came to Mount Pleasant. Good sign!?!

A lot of activity centred around the clothes cupboard where the A Team were busily sorting and matching clothes for their new recipients. A special fundraising day which they held on Saturday had done extremely well. Congratulations ladies!

There was a relaxed, friendly feeling in the hall, commented on by several people who were there, and a light hearted mood to boot. It was great to have Jennie back with us again and to see that she is gradually gaining strength. Keep up the good work Jennie.

Being Father's Day, "Thought for the day"considered God's love for us all. He is our father and longs that we come to Him. His provision of love joy and peace is for anyone who will come in faith. Bottles of water were distributed to everyone to remind them that He is the water of life (unsurprisingly, they were well received and quickly disappeared!) If only folk could experience the power of the "living water" which would ensure that they " never thirst again"

We're running a bit short of toiletries and would welcome donations of small soaps, toothbrushes, flannels etc. If they are small they are more portable and slip into a pocket more easily.

Thanks go to Mount Pleasant for great catering today, and we look forward to seeing our friends from the Cathedral who are coming next week. Thanks to everyone too who helps, in whatever way.
